Excerpts from Sublimation and Other States of Change
Sublimation and Other States of Change is a poetry collection that grapples with the erosive nature of grief, and the space it can clear for new beginnings.

Cigarettes and clementines are sweeter shared with you, like time.
Inner Monologues
by Staci Perry
A year as a pioneer,
Some say I waited out my options,
a self-inflicted failure,
to find success on clear ground.
I felt the need to start from the beginning
again
retrace the steps that got me here.
In cross country,
the back of the race was so peaceful,
where cheers die down,
voyeurs find something else to perverse
the girl beside me
talked me up the hill.
Slow down,
start from the beginning again
imagine the calm
of the start line just settled,
only a minute after the gun.
Where was the path taking me,
if I can not watch my races?
start over.
Did you check your laces?
seeds sown in ferity
began reaping temerity
watch it,
start, again.
Poisoning yourself
does not relieve with death,
death does not relieve.
knowing my weaknesses
was not to nurse them,
but sometimes I find,
they suck me dry.
The Forever Mourning
by Staci Perry
Desperate for a sort of freedom,
I planted my phone
in the ground,
and if worked both ways
as you claim
a tree would grow in the crack of our distance.
I watered
like
an eldest daughter,
for a year I persist.
Mo(u)rnings with you
first in mind.
bloodshed emptied my eyes
tormented am I
Could I abet love of you?
Sculpted by your calloused hands,
your pride, your personhood,
from me, you asked for everything.
I find myself shaped to men like you,
hurting me in ignorance,
imagining more greatness in their gaps,
making homes of emptiness,
falling in love with those who don’t exist.
Fruits raisin before they ripen,
from the young adult, the larger child sirens
